Description:
The Trails Crew Leader provides leadership, coordination, and mentorship for a field crew of 3 individuals completing trail and restoration projects on the Dixie National Forest, Red Cliff Desert Reserve and Kanarra Falls. This position oversees daily work activities, ensures safety compliance, and supports professional development among crew members. The role combines field-based leadership with hands-on conservation work, offering valuable experience in supervision, outdoor project management, and resource stewardship.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a crew in performing trail and fence construction, maintenance, and restoration projects.
- Ensure all crew activities follow established safety protocols and quality standards.
- Communicate daily goals, expectations, and progress with staff and agency partners.
- Assist with training crew members on tool use, safety procedures, and field techniques.
- Monitor project sites, assess conditions, and adjust plans as needed.
- Maintain clear and accurate records of work completed, hours, and materials used.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and respect among crew members.
- Provide feedback and support to help interns develop technical and leadership skills.
- Represent the IIC and partner agencies positively with the public, volunteers, and visitors.
- Assist with logistics including transportation, camping setup, and field safety briefings.
- Enforce IIC Intern Guidebook policies and ensure Leave No Trace principles are practiced.
- Assist the IIC Crew Coordinator with interviewing Crew Members
Qualifications:
- Must be age 21+
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in trail and/or fence work, conservation, or outdoor leadership required.
- Demonstrated ability to lead peers, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts.
- Assist the IIC Crew Coordinator in training fellow crew members.
- Strong knowledge of trail tools, construction techniques, and safety procedures.
- Ability to work long days outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Physical ability to lift at least 30 lbs. and hike long distances with gear.
- Willingness to camp for extended periods with limited or no cell service.
- Organized, dependable, and committed to fostering a positive crew culture.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or experience in recreation management, environmental studies, or natural resources preferred.
